Tips To Keep Your Child Safe Online
Social networks are the most popular thing on the internet. Although many social media platforms have an age limit of 13, many children and teenagers access social media regularly. This includes websites and apps, such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, where users can share content, interact with content created by others and connect with people online.
Social media can expose children to four levels of online dangers outlined by Keeping Kids Safe in Education. These are:
Social media can bring risks of child abuse, including bullying and dangerous sexual behavior, access to inappropriate content and grooming, among others. Caregivers often use social media to target children. Grooming is when someone establishes a relationship with a child and gains their trust for the purpose of abuse, including sexual abuse (online or in person), sexual or criminal abuse, or sexual harassment.
Therefore, teaching children the importance of social media safety is important. We’ve created a social media safety infographic that shows the often ‘dark’ world of the internet. It shows a child taking a picture of themselves and sending it to someone. This person takes a screenshot and shares it, before it ends up with a suspicious person. It is important for children to know the importance of logging out of their computers and accounts, such as email and game accounts, on shared devices. If they don’t come out, it could be easy for someone else to get hold of the information on that computer, including their photos and documents.
We have created an internet safety poster for children that shows the importance of staying off computers. It shows the same image of a thief, stealing from a computer – comparing staying inside and leaving your door open. Children should be taught the importance of computer security at an early age, so that they can protect themselves online and carry this knowledge into their adult lives.

Information such as school uniforms in the mail or regular visits to sites on the internet can give them a lot of information. It is important for children to know the importance of not connecting with strangers and to understand that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are.

Simple Things You Can Do To Be More Secure Online
Years ago, teachers probably had little to do with what was going on outside the classroom. That has changed. We now need to be mindful of our behavior outside the classroom, and be willing to deal with the issues at hand.
Although I am certainly no expert, this is an area that I have always found very interesting. I’m happy to talk about digital citizenship because it’s so important but often overlooked or one-time lessons.
I am convinced that learning digital citizenship doesn’t have to be difficult and you don’t have to be an expert.
Students and teachers alike are online more than ever before. Usually, this is a good thing but problems can arise. Having a positive attitude and thinking ahead can go a long way.

Along with Internet safety, students also need to be taught about things like plagiarism, copyright, Creative Commons, search engines, and effective research methods. These are important points for teachers and students to know if they want to use the Internet correctly and legally.
Teachers have an important role to play as a model of digital citizenship for their class. For example, avoid using images from Google Images in your work and model to students how you found or created your images.
Tips To Stay Safe Online
If you are unsure about the websites your students and school community are using, take the time to research and find out how the various sites work.
Tip: The eSafety Commissioners Office has some great games, apps and social media. Say you hear your students talking about Snapchat or Fortnite or Musical.ly and you don’t know much about it, visit this site for an overview and answers to FAQs.
