When viewing with your own eyes the partial phases of a solar eclipse that occur before and after totality, you should always look through safety solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safety hand-held solar viewer. One method is to use a pinhole projector with a small aperture (for example, a hole punched in an index card) and project the image of the sun onto a nearby surface.
